The panoply of human characters that Will runs into on his journey to the colonel - from a gung ho sarge who only cares about prepping his men for the imminent onslaught, to a weeping captain (I'd like to think he actually weeps for what he knows will happen to his men, not only for himself, being a coward) to a matter-of-fact, yet humane, officer who just knows he has to do his duty, but cares about his men (genuinely horrified when he realizes what Will was about to do, leaving the trench) up to the very colonel MacKenzie, who turns out to be a cynical realist. Yes, the haunting running sequence, when Will knows he will not save them all, but every new soldier leaving the trench will count nonetheless. The intensity of that scene is just out of this world.

In fact there would have been no people of colour serving as working class cannon fodder in any English regiment. Indians had their own regiments.
Also the soldiers in Yorkshire and Devon regiments would have had very broad regional accents, I couldn't see that any effort had been made to reflect this.
Also I can't imagine the general staff ever talking to a lance corporal, that task would have gone right down the line, probably to a lieutenant.
I am amazed that an English director couldn't bring himself to be more authentic, but I guess he was appealing to audiences beyond his island home, and had to be more inclusive.
